Supporting a surface plate

Specifying grade

Cast iron or granite
Both materials hold accuracy; the choice follows the measurement task. The finer the work, the more it typically calls for granite — and a genuine crossover exists, where preference decides. See the comparison ›
Temperature and the measuring environment
Cast iron conducts and equalises temperature quickly; granite responds gradually and evenly. Fine-grade work is specified for temperature-controlled rooms. See the comparison ›
Verification and certification
Products are inspected during manufacture against their governing standard. Calibration is completed as installed; certificates state the measured values against the specified grade, and inspection reports are issued at installation. Quality and Standards ›
Installing bed plates
Bed plates are installed on a foundation designed for the task; imposed loads, pit construction and the interface with the finished floor are detailed for each installation. A multi-plate field takes its final form on site, levelled to a common plane and verified as installed.
